SEO Basics: How to Actually Help Your Rankings Improve

8 min read

Search engine optimization sounds like something you need a specialist and a retainer for. Some of it is. But for a small business, most of the gains come from a short list of unglamorous fundamentals that a lot of sites still get wrong.

Start with the words your customers use

Businesses describe themselves in industry language. Customers search in plain language. A company might call itself a "residential mechanical contractor." Nobody types that. They type "AC repair near me."

Write down the ten things people actually call you about, in their words. Those are your pages.

One page per thing you do

A single services page that lists eight services will rarely rank for any of them. Eight focused pages, each answering one question thoroughly, will do far better.

This is also just more useful for the visitor, who wanted to read about the one thing they came for.

Speed and mobile are not optional

More than half of small business web traffic is on a phone, often on a mediocre connection. If your page takes six seconds to load, a large share of those visitors are gone before they see anything.

Compress your images. Skip the giant background video. Test your site on your own phone, on cellular data, away from your office wifi.

Titles and descriptions do real work

The page title is the blue clickable line in search results. It should say what the page is and where you are. "Home" is a wasted title. "Mobile Notary in Pahrump, NV | Evenings & Weekends" is doing something.

Local signals

  • A claimed and complete Google Business Profile
  • Your address and phone in the footer of every page
  • Consistent listings across directories
  • Location mentioned naturally in your page content, not stuffed
  • Structured data describing your business

What to skip

Buying backlink packages, keyword stuffing your footer, and anyone who guarantees a number one ranking. Nobody can guarantee that, and the shortcuts that briefly work are the ones that get sites penalized.

SEO is compounding maintenance, not a one-time purchase. That is genuinely the whole secret.
